Nate Kauffman is a Landscape Architecture educator; designer,
planner and award-winning teacher from the San Francisco Bay Area.
He holds a bachelor's from UCSD and a master's from UC Berkeley.
Nate is a private consultant, advising clients on strategic approaches to
sustainability, resilience and adaptation. As a Visualization Contractor, Nate assists clients to express and articulate their concepts and values through digital 3D modeling and competition-level drawings and models. Nate has done work for the San Francisco Estuary Institute (SFEI), The Bay Institute, the California State Coastal Conservancy, the California Natural Resources Agency, Bay Nature Magazine, the Oro Loma Sanitary District,
local design firms and others.
As Director of Projects for OWLIZED, a tech startup focusing on augmented reality visualizations, Nate heads the Climate Solutions sector, working to provide people with a greater awareness of their environment and fostering dialogue about their place in it.
He has written extensively about the plight and possibilities of a changing world,
and his writing has been published in several journals and new media platforms.
Nate founded LEAP (the Live Edge Adaptation Project) to address the social and environmental justice issues embodied and emerging in the challenge posed by Climate Change and Sea Level Rise. His approach to this challenge is synthetic, networking across groups of stakeholders to develop platforms in public awareness, political lobbying and
envisioning projects that can serve as common ground + proofs of concepts to shape and improve the built and natural worlds.
He believes that individuals, communities and societies have an opportunity and responsibility to discover and define a more just and healthy world and future by rising to the immense challenges posed by a rapidly changing world.
A UCB 2014 Graduate Student Instructor of the Year, Nate is passionate about teaching.
An national award-winning studio instructor at UC Berkeley, Nate is also a three-time URBANFRAME fellow, teaching at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's School of Architecture and leading a youth-centered design/build summer studio for
an international cadre of teens.
Nate spends his (limited) free time in, on, under and around water.
